Growing Vegetables for Beginners — Grow your own Produce

Our parents and grandparents grew vegetables out of necessity.  They often fed their families with fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. In late Autumn potatoes were picked and stored, onions were hung up to dry in sheds, and apples were picked and carefully wrapped for use later.

Growing vegetables has seen resurgence recently and many people have rekindled their relationship with the soil. There is great satisfaction in putting a seed in the soil and watching it germinate and grow. The added enjoyment of putting fresh food on your table makes the effort involved well worth it.

If you want to start a vegetable garden here are some tips to help you:

  • Vegetables’ require good soil and sunlight.
  • Using raised beds improves drainage and increases soil temperature.
  • Start small the first year and just grow a few easy to grow items: onions, radish, beetroot, carrots and potatoes are all easy.
  • Control weeds before they get too large.
  • Seek help from fellow gardeners, they will be only too pleased to assist.
  • Be prepared to get your hands dirty.
